Essential Knowledge Challenge
The Essential Knowledge Challenge (EKC) is a
fifty item applied on-line self assessment knowledge test, with
questions sourced from the major updates, briefings and reference
material found within the relevant Essential Knowledge Update (EKU)
modules.
The Programme
Each EKC is released six months after the related EKU. The
question format includes Single Best Answer, Extended Matching
Questions, Clinical Photograph and Statistical Graph interpretation
as well as clinical algorithm flow charts. The origin of all
questions can be found in each related Essential Knowledge Update.
The EKC is a recognised tool for demonstrating that GPs are
participating in CPD for
Revalidation
purposes.
In 2008/09 the RCGP launched the Essential Knowledge
Challenge pilots (EKC 1 & 2) based on the content of Essential
Knowledge Updates Pilots (EKU 1 & 2). The pilot Updates and
Challenges will be archived in April 2010 as they may no longer
describe current best practice.
Current Challenges
The Essential Knowledge Challenge
3 (EKC 3) is based upon the content of the EKU 3 (May 2009)
The Essential Knowledge Challenge
2 (EKC 2) is based upon the content of the EKU 2 (November
2008)
The Essential Knowledge Challenge
1 (EKC 1) is based upon the content of the EKU 1 (April
2008)
Coming Soon!
Essential Knowledge Challenge (EKC)
4 is due for release in early May 2010 and is based on the
content from the fourth release of the Essential Knowledge
Update.
Certificate
The origin of all the Essential Knowledge Challenge questions
can be found within the material of each related Essential
Knowledge Update. A score of 70% or more represents a “Passing
score” and provides GPs with a confirmatory RCGP certificate which
can be printed and used for CPD, Appraisal and Revalidation
purposes. The certificate records the number of times a doctor has
taken to complete the test.
Archiving of Pilot Updates &
Challenges
Answers to Essential Knowledge Challenges 1 & 2 will be
released in April 2010. After this point Essential Knowledge
Updates and Challenges 1 & 2, launched in 2008, will be
available in a new ‘Archive’ section of the eLearning website. You
can continue to participate within the Essential Knowledge
Challenges for self-directed learning purposes; however you will be
no longer able to obtain a certificate for inclusion within your
appraisal folder or to achieve CPD credits.
Revalidation and Continuing Professional
Development
It is acknowledged within the current Revalidation Guide
that
the Essential Knowledge Updates and Challenges are an acceptable
tool to help demonstrate that a GP is updating their knowledge.
Through participating in the Essential Knowledge Challenge and by
studying the associated modules in the corresponding Knowledge
Update, GPs will be able to award themselves credits under the
planned RCGP CPD
credit system.
Revalidation ePortfolio
The RCGP is currently in the process of developing an ePortfolio that
will enable GPs to record their CPD in support of Revalidation.
