Multiple Sclerosis Sessions

Multiple Sclerosis in General Practice: web-based learning module has been designed to enable you to meet the outcomes described in the RCGP Curriculum Statement 15.7: Neurological Problems. By the end of the module, you should be able to:

Primary care management

• Manage primary contact with patients who have MS
• Coordinate care with other primary care health professionals, such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists and district nurses to enable chronic disease management and rehabilitation.
• Describe the indications for referral to a neurologist

 

Person-centred care

• Communicate prognosis truthfully and sensitively to patients and share uncertainty when the patient wants this information

• Demonstrate empathy and compassion towards patients with an incurable and disabling neurological condition

• Describe the importance of continuity of care for patients with a chronic neurological condition

 

Specific problem-solving skills

• Describe the common presentations and functional findings to aid a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis

• Demonstrate a structured, logical approach to the diagnosis and management of multiple sclerosis

 

A comprehensive approach

• Counsel patients appropriately regarding medication, drug interactions and side effects

• Provide advice on other considerations including benefits, home adaptations, and contraceptive and pregnancy advice to people with multiple sclerosis.

 

Community orientation

• Describe the current medical standards of fitness to drive for people with multiple sclerosis

• Describe the role of the MS Nurse and the multi-disciplinary team

 

A Holistic approach

• Recognise that MS often affect patients during their working lives, and consequently has a large impact on a family’s social and economic wellbeing

• Recognise the stigma associated with neurological disability.
