This section of the website provides information on the variety
of initiatives that the College offers to support all GPs, at every
stage of their career, after gaining their Certificate of
Completion of Training. It focuses on the development of the
individual GP in order to: enhance their clinical practice and
career progression; help them support the teams they work in
and continuously improve the quality of care that they
deliver to their patients and the public.
Revalidation will be the key
focus of our work over the next two years as we move towards
a system in which all doctors will be revalidated in a five
yearly cycle. This will be dependent on the development of a robust
and consistent Appraisal
Process.
The RCGP Continuing Professional
Development (CPD) Credits System will have a central role in
supporting revalidation by supporting GPs to continuously update
their knowledge and review how they apply it in practice.
Essential General Practice
Updates will contribute to the CPD Credits System by providing
convenient, and assessable, access to the new and changing
knowledge relevant to GPs. A range of other Distance Learning provision and Provider
Signposting will provide additional support.
Opportunities for individual development include the Leadership programme, specialist
educational programmes developed by the Substance Misuse Unit and a non
examination route to membership of RCGP through interim Membership by Assessment of
Performance (iMAP).
The Quality Initiatives provide support in developing practice
teams through programmes such as Quality Practice Award; the accrediting of
the provider environment is being explored through piloting
the Primary Medical Care Provider
Accreditation (PMCPA) scheme.
All of the CPD and RCGP Quality related initiatives are overseen
by the Professional Development
Board.
