Practice support services

The RCGP can offer diagnostic assessment and targeted support tailored to meet the particular needs of practices. We have a national team of 80 GPs, practice managers, practice nurses and pharmacists who can be deployed to support practices on the ground.

We already have an excellent track record in supporting practices in difficulty through the NHS England endorsed Peer Support Programme for practices placed in special measures. Since 2014 our team of clinicians and experts have worked with over 145 practices, driving improvement and successfully supporting practices. To date, 80% of practices who have used the RCGP programme and been re-inspected have successfully exited special measures (as of January 2018).

We have now extended our service to meet the needs of practices who are not in special measures but may be struggling to cope with the unique pressures placed on general practice.

This is a bespoke service which can be designed around the needs of the individual practice or a group of practices. We welcome enquiries from individual practices and from commissioners. For further information and to discuss your needs, contact our team at rcgpforwardview@rcgp.org.uk

The services

Our support is entirely bespoke and responsive to the needs of both the practice and the development plans of the commissioner.

Diagnostic review

We have a national team of GPs, practice managers, practice nurses and pharmacists who can be deployed to support the practice with in-depth expertise and root cause analysis. Your adviser team can provide a holistic diagnostic report and support the practice to develop an action plan, work with the practice team to prioritise the actions and provide signposting to specific support and training suppliers.

Targeted support

We can offer specific, time-bound interventions, tailored to the needs of the practice. The support can be aligned to the CQC themes if appropriate: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led. The RCGP advisers will also provide a holistic review, looking at performance overall and identifying blocks to progress. Working with existing practice resources is a key component of the support and is vital in order for changes to become embedded and sustainable.

Targeted support can address the following areas:

Workforce / capacity issues

  • Workforce analysis / scoping
  • Optimising skills mix
  • Demand management including developing telephone triage
  • Recruitment / succession planning
  • Supporting working at scale – particularly mergers

  • Contingency planning
  • Developing a business case

“Thank you for a comprehensive feedback report, which will help us to improve quality of care for our patients and continue to maintain the high standards of care…RCGP helped to formulate a structure of leadership in the practice. We were enabled to build a reflective practice which is effective and safe by use of tools such as audits, regular reviews of our significant events, complaints and patient survey analysis… the skills we learned from the RCGP team did not only help us achieve the desired ratings but will also help us to provide best care to our patients on a regular basis.”
