Commission on Generalism

The RCGP, in partnership with the Health Foundation, launched the Commission on Generalism to examine the contribution of medical generalism and the role of the generalist in today’s healthcare system.

Commission on Generalism Report

The report was issued on 7 October 2011. RCGP Chair Dr Clare Gerada issued the following statement:

"This independent report raises questions about the concept of generalism and the role of the GP in today's health service, as well as making some important recommendations for developing, strengthening and promoting medical generalism to deliver effective patient care in the NHS of the future.

"We would like to thank Baroness Finlay and all the Commissioners for the expertise, insight, impartiality and academic rigour they have brought to the process, as well as thanking the vast number of contributors who took part.

"The archetypal generalists are GPs, and as a profession we have unique skills in our ability to provide continuity of care to patients, manage patients across their physical, psychological and social needs and to act as navigators of care. However, the world in which we operate is becoming increasingly complicated and complex and we must make sure that other health professionals are able to support us in this work.

"The publication of the report today marks the start of an extensive consultation process with RCGP members, medical professionals and other stakeholders. This will include regional 'listening events' and a wider written consultation, the results of which will inform our detailed response to the Commissioners' recommendations and the publication of our final report in 2012.

"The Commission on Generalism has the potential to inform and influence healthcare policy for years to come. We hope it will develop a better understanding of and raise the profile of generalism so that GPs can continue to deliver the very best possible care to patients."
