Local Primary Care Services

England

The NHS website provides comprehensive information on local health and social care services and also outlines how the NHS works as an organisation. You can search online for the nearest GP practices in your area, ordered by distance from your home address. A new website - Your GP Guide - has been designed to give patients in England and Wales detailed information about their local general practices. Patients can use it to:

  • Find out more about a particular practice
  • Compare what different practices have to offer
  • Find out how well the practices are performing

The local Primary Care Trust (PCT), responsible for delivering primary health care services, will also supply a list of local GP surgeries, and can send a copy of Your Guide to Local Health - a booklet containing information about the range of local NHS services. Further information on local primary care services may also be obtained from the 24-hour NHS Direct  helpline (Tel: 0845 46 47).

Patients in England can also visit an NHS Walk-in Centre for a range of NHS services, including: health information, advice and treatment on minor illnesses (colds, infections etc), and minor injuries (sprains, cuts etc).

Consultants

The Dr Foster website provides information on consultants working in the UK. Its consultant database can be searched by condition or procedure, specialty, or name. Those considered to be leading experts in their specialty can also found.

Information located on this website should be used in conjunction with the advice of family doctors - UK consultants usually only accept patients who have been referred to them by another doctor, normally a GP.
