NICE Patient and Public Involvement Programme

Introduction

Patients can use their own expert skills and knowledge to train other individuals with similar conditions; or by directly commenting on nationally-produced health information and clinical guidelines use their individual experience to influence universal patient information.

NHS Expert Patient Programme

The NHS Expert Patients Programme (EPP) is a training initiative designed to help people with long-term chronic conditions in England develop the skills and confidence to manage their own condition. The EPP is run by a community interest company (CIC) that is expanding and diversifying the programme to meet the needs of people in marginalised and vulnerable groups. The Government is committed to increasing EPP capacity from 12,000 course places a year to over 100,000 by 2012.

Local EPP courses take place over six weeks and are led by people who themselves have long-term health conditions. Patients can attend the courses and also train as tutors. Find out more about the Programme and local courses.

The Expert Patients Programme (EPP) is also available in Wales, with its own dedicated website for patients.

NICE Patient and Public Involvement Programme

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is responsible for providing national guidance on the diagnosis, management and treatment of diseases and conditions. Although NICE decisions are based on clinical evidence, they are set against a background of social values and judgments. It is therefore important to take into account what the public thinks about these key issues. The Patient and Public Involvement Programme (PPIP) involves patients, carers and members of the public across NICE work programmes.
