What Treatment Shall I Choose?

Best Treatments

The Best Treatments website – available via NHS Direct Online – uses the most up-to-date medical research (BMJ Clinical Evidence) to tell patients which treatments and drugs work for which condition, and the side effects that may be experienced. Armed with this knowledge patients can decide in partnership with their doctors whether to undergo a particular treatment, operation or test.

The site includes information on best treatments for a wide range of common conditions, such as back pain, depression, epilepsy, high blood pressure, migraine and certain types of cancer.

Medicines Guidance

Medicine Guides provide reliable and understandable information on individual medicines to help patients make better informed choices about treatment and use their medicine safely and effectively. The Guides are developed in partnership with a number of organisations, in particular NHS Direct, as part of an initiative called the Medicines Information Project - a programme for improving the quality of health information for patients and the public.

The Guides link to information about the condition and the range of treatment options available, provided via NHS Direct Online. The resource also includes features such as animation to demonstrate inhaler technique.

Patients who use certain medicines on a long-term basis will often be invited by their pharmacist to a medicines use review. This will usually take place in the local pharmacy and will focus on how patients are getting on with their medicines.

Patient Experiences

Reading about the experiences of others can be a good way of helping a patient decide on a treatment option. The Database of Individual Patient Experiences (DIPEx) website is designed for patients who have to undergo treatment and who would like to find out from other patients what the treatment was like or what it is like to live with a particular condition. Patients can watch, listen to or read interviews, find reliable information on treatment choices, and learn how to access support.

The site covers cancers, heart disease, mental health, neurological conditions, and screening programmes; with plans for new areas on pregnancy, teenage health, chronic illnesses and many others.

Another good source of information on real patient experiences is a new website called Patient Opinion. Patient Opinion is an enterprise founded by Paul Hodgkin, a GP in Sheffield, who wanted to make the wisdom and insights of patients available to the NHS and other patients. The website allows patients to rank health services and share the story of their care. Patient Opinion sells this data to Trusts and PCTs and is structured as a not-for-profit social enterprise.

Specialist Online Libraries

The National electronic Library for Health (NeLH) has developed a suite of online Specialist Libraries dedicated to the best currently available evidence in each clinical area. Although designed for GPs and specialists the information will be useful to patients seeking more in-depth knowledge about a condition and its treatment.
