PPG FAQ
What is the Patient
Partnership
Group?
The Patient Partnership Group (PPG), established in 1983, is a
body which the College uses to maintain its links with patients and
their concerns, in an attempt to ensure that the views of patients
are taken into account in the development of general practice. The
Group comprises of general practitioners and lay members and
advises the College on a range of medical issues. The majority of
the group are lay people, as is the chairperson.
How does the Patient Partnership Group operate?
The PPG meets four times a year, as well as meeting with other
College Patients' groups annually. It contributes to College
working parties, documents and official responses to outside
bodies, as well as initiating debates within the College by raising
issues of concern. It has a strong involvements in the RCGP Annual
National Primary Care Conference where it hosts a project stand and
leads the development of patient related sessions
There are also PPG representatives on most of the working groups
within the College. Lay Members act as lay assessors for Fellowship
by Assessment. Details of previous PPG meetings can be found on the
College website.
Has it produced any guidelines or documents?
The guidance document Removal of Patients from GP’s Lists:
Guidance for College Members was prepared by the PPG, and endorsed
by College Council; aimed at minimising the distress to patients
and general practitioners when the doctor-patient relationship
irreparably breaks down.
