RCGP Welcomes Funding for Cancer Survivors

7th May 2009

The RCGP has welcomed the government’s pledge of £1.6 million for Macmillan's National Cancer Survivorship Initiative.

"We welcome the government’s grant for the Macmillan initiative and their acknowledgment of the importance of survivorship services” said RCGP Chair Steve Field said.

“As cancer survival rates have risen over the past decade it is becoming increasingly important that survivorship services continue to improve. It is crucial that cancer survivors are given all the help they need to regain a healthy life after battling their illness.”

“GPs have a focus on the whole person - holistic care which is vital in helping meet the physical, psychological and social needs of cancer survivors.”

“The RCGP recently held a workshop with leading cancer experts, including cancer Tsar Professor Mike Richards, to look at all issues relating to cancer services in primary care – including survivorship services. We will publish the findings before the end of the year.”
