Dr David Kernick

How to manage headaches in general practice

Presented by Dr David Kernick FRCGP

RCGP Clinical Champion for Headache

Despite a high impact on the lives of sufferrers, the needs of headache patients go largely unmet. The majority do not receive a diagnosis and when they do tretment is less than ideal. This update by Dr Kernick will focus on ways to manage headaches in general practice.

Educational objectives:

* Headache is not easy to manage within the constraints of a ten minute consultation. What is it, how can I treat it, does it represent an underlying pathology? The objective of the evening is to clarify this area and enable GPs to be more confident in the management of this common problem.

Dr Kernick  is a GPwSI in headache. He started life as a chemical engineer and worked in Canada with the Proctor & Gamble Company before returning to the Welsh National School of Medicine. He has been a full-time General Practitioner for the past 25 years in a large medical group in Exeter which is an NHS R&D practice where he is the lead research GP. He runs an Intermediate Care Headache Clinic in Exeter and was formerly Chairman of the British Association for the Study of Headache.
