RCGP response to the interim Darzi report

We welcome the interim report and are particularly pleased with the major emphasis on primary care and health inequalities, especially as the report draws on many of the proposals that we presented in our Roadmap on the Future of General Practice published only two weeks ago.

The College’s core values are about raising the quality of care for our patients through high quality general practice. We believe in clinical excellence in primary care and this report signals major new investment in primary care. We welcome this but it must be used wisely.

The RCGP welcomes the opportunity to work with the government and English NHS on implementing this report. Engagement with GPs and patients is essential.

The College is determined that the values of general practice are upheld and that the doctor-patient relationship is maintained and strengthened.

I will be requesting a meeting with the Secretary of State to discuss this in further detail.

Professor Steve Field, RCGP Chair-elect
