RCGP Chairman appointed to lead work on improving access for ethnic minority patients

24 July 2007

RCGP Chairman Professor Mayur Lakhani has been asked by the Secretary of State for Health, Alan Johnson, to chair a group aimed at improving GP services for ethnic minority patients.

The appointment follows publication of the results of England's biggest patient survey by the Department of Health today (24 July 2007).

Professor Lakhani said: “The results of the survey are a positive affirmation of the good work done by family doctors up and down the country. Our GP services are among the best in the world and to maintain these high standards, it is absolutely vital we listen to all our patients including black and minority ethnic (BME) groups.

“GP access is an issue of public concern amongst BME groups and this is not going to go away. There is no shortage of analysis - it is knowing what to do next that matters. I therefore welcome this initiative to agree a way forward and am determined to work with GPs to hear their ideas about how to make this work.”
