RCGP response to Select Committee report into Modernising Medical Careers (MMC)

8 May 2008

Dr Bill Reith, Chair of the RCGP Postgraduate Training Board, said:

“We welcome the report of the Select Committee into Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) and are pleased to have had the opportunity to submit evidence to the inquiry.

“It has been widely acknowledged that the selection system for GPs worked well and the RCGP curriculum has been heralded as the way ahead for GP training. We are now working with the four Departments of Health across the UK to see how we can move to the five year training programme that is needed. However, we are concerned about the plight of international doctors and share the concerns of the Health Select Committee on how the issue was addressed.

“We are pleased with the development of the MMC Programme Board and look forward to working with the Board and the four Departments of Health to further develop high quality training programmes across the UK so that we can produce high quality GPs and improve care for our patients in the future."
