Prime Minister’s proposals for a preventative health service – RCGP response

7 January 2008

Professor Steve Field, Chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners said:

“The RCGP has not been contacted about the proposals but we welcome the Prime Minister’s acknowledgment of the central role of GPs in providing preventative care for patients. GPs are already making considerable progress in preventative healthcare and patients are reaping the benefit of screening programmes including cervical cancer and diabetes while interventions such as blood pressure checks are preventing thousands of people a year from having heart attacks and strokes.

“We support any move that makes diagnostics more accessible to patients and today’s proposals have enormous potential for delivering better patient care. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss with the Government how we can provide further services in primary care and to see what additional resources will be made available to help deliver these.”
