RCGP response to King’s Fund report on polyclinics

05.06.08

RCGP Chairman Professor Steve Field said: “This report makes a lot of sense and it is encouraging to see some research on the subject. The RCGP welcomes any investment in primary care but this should be targeted at the needs of patients and carried out in consultation with local people and healthcare professionals – not at the expense of existing high quality services.

“We believe that the new health centres announced by Lord Darzi are needed in some parts of the country but situating one in every primary care trust is probably unnecessary while there are some PCTs that might require more investment.  PCTs and local GPs should be looking towards the federated model of general practice, with GPs working together to provide more services for patients closer to their homes.

“We are delighted that such a renowned and independent body as the King’s Fund is supporting our Roadmap on the future of general practice as the way ahead and look forward to adding further to the debate later this month with the launch of our follow-up paper on GP federations. We believe that GP federations are the key to providing even better standards of care for our patients.”
