RCGP response to Secretary of State's announcement on health inequalities

09/06/08

RCGP Chairman Professor Steve Field said: “Everyone has the right to quality healthcare regardless of personal circumstances or where they live, but the reality is that there are some patients who are not getting the services or the standard of service they deserve and so we very much welcome the Secretary of State’s announcement.

“GPs have an important role in reducing health inequalities. With unrivalled access to the heart of communities, we can influence the health inequalities agenda as practitioners, commissioners and community leaders. We have the skills and resources at our disposal to help reduce health inequalities and improve standards of care for our patients.

“To have a national health service that is fit for purpose in the 21st Century we must work to ensure that local services meet the needs of patients - and that all patients receive equally high standards of care."
