CSA and AKT results summary
10.07.08
The Royal College of General Practitioners
(RCGP) is pleased to release a summary document of the performance
of registrars in its licensing assessment. The analysis covers the
Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) and Applied Knowledge Test
(AKT). It does not include the results of the Work Place
Based Assessment (WPBA) or the final decisions of the Annual Review
of Trainee Competence Progression (ARCP) panels which have still to
deliberate.
The new MRCGP assessment started in August
2007 after its approval by PMETB as part of the licensing process
toward certification for General Practice.
The RCGP has delivered a high quality
assessment within a short period of time, in the three diets
delivered between October 2007 and May 2008. The AKT was the first
postgraduate assessment to be delivered electronically at remote
testing centres using the Pearson Vue test venues. The CSA is
delivered centrally in purpose-designed assessment suites in South
London. This facility offers a world class testing venue which has
worked supremely well. Feedback from all stakeholders has been
excellent.
A summary of the results of the first year of
testing is tabled below. It is still too early to offer a
full analysis of registrar performance as there are no candidates
as yet who have undergone full ‘run through training’ since the
inception of the new programme.
However 3,013 nMRCGP candidates have now taken
the AKT and 1,703 have taken the CSA. Most candidates were
successful at the first time of taking the assessment, but for
those who were not we have data to show that the majority were
successful after two attempts. We do not yet have sufficient data
to evaluate a cohort of candidates who have taken the assessment on
three occasions.
First time takers pass rate

CSA

Dr Mike Bewick, Chair of the RCGP Assessment
Committee, says: “The RCGP, in partnership with the Deaneries,
offers its congratulations to all the successful candidates and
records its thanks to the many staff and assessors who have made
this possible.”
