RCGP response to the Department of Health's call for more contraceptive injections and implants

Professor Steve Field, Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), said:

“GPs across the country are working closely with their teams and practice nurses to provide comprehensive contraceptive care for their patients. This high quality care is not simply about prescribing the pill but about providing advice on alternative contraception methods, prevention of sexually acquired infections and pre-conception care.

“We welcome any move that will help raise awareness of contraception care amongst the public and health care professionals; we must do everything we possibly can to reduce the unacceptably high pregnancy rate in this country.

"Contraceptive care is covered in depth and assessed rigorously in GP training.  Contraceptive services are a key part of a practice’s workload and I know that GPs have been working very hard with their patients to design services that are more accessible and focused on the needs of the population.”
