RCGP response to announcement of new Cabinet

The RCGP has urged the new Secretary of State to listen to GPs’ views on how to improve care for patients - and promote general practice in a more positive light.

RCGP Chairman Professor Mayur Lakhani said: “A good start is essential. GPs have become easy targets for what are deep seated and complex problems in the NHS but we are part of the solution to strengthening the NHS, not the problem.

"The Secretary of State must win back the trust of GPs and move to a new approach, characterised by optimism and a constructive positive regard for GPs.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to make further strides in improving patient care. We would like to see a determination by the new Government to work with us in tackling the challenges we face, such as health inequalities, access to care including urgent care, fragmentation of care and striking a better deal for patients with mental health problems.

"The RCGP will also push the case for stronger education and training for general practice, including flexible working and returner schemes.

“The new government must not miss this chance to make full use of the skills and expertise of GPs and their practices by supporting meaningful professional engagement which is essential to strengthen patient care in the NHS.”
