RCGP statement on GP Training

26 June 2006

We are very concerned that training budgets are being cut – and the strong GP workforce of the future jeopardised - in order to meet NHS deficits. We will be making representations to Ministers about this. We understand that money to make up the deficits must be found from somewhere but high quality training for the GPs of the future must be safeguarded and cannot be compromised, even in the short term.

The RCGP wants to see more invested in training – and greater innovation in methods of training in primary care. We urge Strategic Health Authorities to improve the resourcing of training programmes for general practice. This is essential to deliver the aims of the White Paper Our Health, Our Care, Our Say and to improve patient care even further.

RCGP Chairman Professor Mayur Lakhani said:

“We can understand the distress of junior doctors who have had their GP training deferred. The RCGP is determined to ensure that innovative specialist training for general practice remains high on the agenda and will continue to make representations to Government.  We will also continue to work with our colleagues on the GPC to ensure that GP workforce issues are addressed by the NHS.”
