Staff at Brinnington Health Centre were celebrating on Friday (28/3) when the Chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Professor Steve Field arrived to present them with a Quality Practice Award for excellence in primary care.

The practice is only the third in Cheshire to receive the award which takes 18 months to achieve and places high demands on the skills and input of the entire practice team.   Staff are required to submit a portfolio of written evidence set against 23 sets of criteria including Health Promotion, Patient and Public Involvement and Team Working and are visited by a team of four assessors before the award is presented.

Professor Steve Field, who presented the award, remarked: “I grew up quite close to this area and it’s wonderful to come back and see such a fine example of excellent health care being provided to the local community.  Undertaking the Quality Practice Award is no mean feat and the staff of Brinnington are to be commended for their outstanding commitment to their patients.  Coming here today also gave me the opportunity to take time out for a quick visit to my parents for a cup of tea so everyone’s a winner!”

Paul Ansbro, Practice Manager at Brinnington Health Centre, said: “The practice found the experience of undertaking the Quality Practice Award very rewarding and we are extremely proud of our success.  The entire practice and primary healthcare team have worked extremely hard over a number of years to provide an excellent quality of healthcare for the people of Brinnington and this award is a culmination of all that hard work.”

The two practices look after 8,600 patients in Brinnington, Stockport comprising a good mix of young families and older patients. The practice also provides a shared care drug service and two of the GPs are involved in community drug team. Brinnington also provides chronic disease management services to patients and has a Children's Mental Health Development Worker who works closely with the local schools.

Recently, the practice began to produce a monthly newsletter, signposting patients to new and existing services. They have also recently started to provide Diabetes Information Days at the local church hall providing patients with advice about the condition and giving them the opportunity to speak to a dietician.

NOTES TO EDITORS
Practices achieving QPA have found that the process encourages a real sense of team spirit, pride in each other's areas of work and an improved understanding of working together towards a better environment for patients and staff. The criteria is continually modified and developed further to reflect the ongoing changes in general practice. Practices who undertake the assessment are therefore actively encouraged to feed into the development process.

The Royal College of General Practitioners is a network of over 34,000 family doctors working to improve care for patients. We work to encourage and maintain the highest standards of general medical practice and act as the voice of GPs on education, training, research and clinical standards.
