Royal College of
General Practitioners appoints new Chairman
Professor Steve Field has been elected Chairman of the Royal
College of General Practitioners (RCGP). Dr Clare Gerada and
Dr Hasmukh Joshi have been appointed Vice Chairs.
Professor Field is the 20th RCGP
Chair to be elected by the RCGP Council and will hold the post for
three years.
Professor Field, 48, has a long involvement
with the College and spearheaded the introduction of the first-ever
GP training curriculum which came into force in August this
year.
Married with two children, Professor Field is
the Regional Postgraduate Dean for NHS West Midlands Workforce
Deanery, Honorary Professor of Medical Education at the University
of Warwick, and Honorary Professor of the School of Medicine at the
University of Birmingham.
Throughout his tenure as Chair, he will
continue to work as a GP Partner at the Bellevue Medical Centre in
Edgbaston, Birmingham.
Professor Field has published many academic
papers and books, including a best-selling book on the GP
curriculum, and is co-author of the landmark RCGP document The
Future Direction of General Practice: A Roadmap.
He says: “It is an enormous privilege to be
appointed Chairman at such a significant and historic time for
general practice. As a GP educator and frontline clinician, I am
well aware of the of the major challenges – and opportunities –
facing modern general practice and am looking forward to working
with Dr Gerada and Dr Joshi in taking the RCGP into the next
exciting stage of its development.”
Dr Gerada has been a GP in Lambeth since
1991. Prior to general practice, Dr Gerada worked in
psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital in South London, specialising
in substance misuse. This remains her key professional interest and
she is currently a GP specialist in this area, managing patients
with heroin and cocaine addiction.
Dr Joshi is an examiner for the College
examination, the MRCGP. He is also a lead assessor on
the General Medical Council Fitness to Practise Panel and a
part-time GP in South Wales.
