RCGP releases new training DVD

A new DVD to help GP trainers prepare trainees for the Case-based discussion component of the Workplace Based Assessment (WPBA) has been launched by the RCGP.

“Talking the Talk: Using Case-based discussion” provides simple and clear guides to all aspects of the College (RCGP) membership assessment, the nMRCGP.

The combined DVD and workbook explains Case-based discussion (CbD) in detail and covers the use of exploratory oral techniques, the gathering of evidence, judgment-making about the competence of the specialty registrar as well as how to accurately record a discussion in the Extended Trainer’s Record (ETR).

The DVD demonstrates four CbDs in action with different trainers interviewing specialty registrars at various stages of training.

Nav Chana, who co-authored the DVD with Patti Gardiner, Amar Rughani and Nicki Williams said, “We hope that this will be a really helpful resource for both trainers and trainees alike.”

Notes to Editors

  • The Workplace Based Assessment (WPBA) along with the Applied knowledge test (AKT) and Clinical skills assessment (CSA) are the three categories that constitute the nMRCGP.
  • The nMRCGP covers all aspects of the curriculum and is the single process by which doctors can obtain their CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training). The nMRCGP is also an essential requirement for entry to the General Medical Council (GMC) Generalist Register and is the main route to membership of the RCGP.
  • The Royal College of General Practitioners is the largest membership organisation in the United Kingdom solely for GPs.  It aims to encourage and maintain the highest standards of general medical practice and to act as the “voice” of GPs on issues concerned with education; training; research; and clinical standards.  Founded in 1952, the RCGP has over 30,000 members who are committed to improving patient care, developing their own skills and promoting general practice as a discipline.
