Professor Stephen Field FRCGP is to become
next Chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners
(RCGP).
Professor Field will succeed current RCGP
Chairman, Professor Mayur Lakhani, who finishes his three year term
of office in November 2007.
Elected by the RCGP Council, Professor Field
has a long involvement with the College – he is currently Chair of
its Professional Development Board and spearheaded the introduction
of the new GP training curriculum which comes into force in August
this year.
A practising GP in inner-city Birmingham, Professor Field, 47,
is the Regional Postgraduate Dean for West Midlands Deanery and a
member of the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board
(PMETB).
He is Honorary Professor of Medical Education,
University of Warwick, and Honorary Professor in the School of
Medicine, University of Birmingham, UK. He has had many academic
papers and books published and is married with two children.
Professor Field will take up the position of
Chairman elect on 16 July 2007 and will work closely with current
Chairman Professor Lakhani to ensure a smooth transition in
November.
He said: “It is an enormous privilege to be appointed chairman
elect at such a significant and historic time for general practice.
As a GP educator and frontline clinician, I am well aware of the of
the major challenges – and opportunities – facing modern general
practice and am looking forward to taking the RCGP into the next
exciting stage of its development.”

priorities for the College until after he assumes office as
Chairman elect. **
Notes to Editors:
- Professor Field will take up the position of
Chairman elect after June Council on 16 July 2007. He will take up
his position as Chairman on 16 November 2007,
following the RCGP Annual General Meeting.
- The RCGP Chairman is elected by RCGP Council
members every three years. The role of the Chairman is to set
policy and strategic direction of the College.
