Welsh healthcare professionals tackle substance misuse

19 December 2006

Welsh Minister for Health and Social Services Dr Brian Gibbons presented twenty nine healthcare professionals from across Wales with their certificates at a prestigious “graduation” ceremony for healthcare professionals in Corryton.

Twenty nine healthcare professionals from across Wales were presented with certificates to show they had successfully completed part two of  a course in the management of substance misuse run by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP)

The RCGP has been successfully running the course for four years in Wales and over 180 Welsh candidates have completed it so far.

Funded by the Welsh Assembly, this qualification provides healthcare practitioners with advice and specialist training to meet the health needs of patients who misuse drugs and alcohol. It is a two-part qualification and participants attend a national masterclass and six study days over a six month period.

Dr Mel Bagshaw who coordinates the course says: “We were delighted to see so many health professionals successfully completing this intense course. Attaining the RCGP Certificate in Management of Substance Misuse recognises a gold standard of training which will have real benefits for drug and alcohol users throughout Wales.”
