Recommendation 86 of the Laming Report into the death of
Victoria Climbie, invited the Royal College of General
Practitioners to explore the feasibility of extending the
process of new child patient registrations to include gathering
information on wider social and developmental issues likely to
affect the welfare of the child, for example their living
conditions and their school attendance. (para 12.29) In
order to respond, the College organised a workshop to explore this
recommendation in the context of both the Inquiry and current and
emerging health policy.
The workshop took place in January 2004. The report has been
produced by Dr Ruth Bastable MRCGP and Jan Horwath Senior Lecturer
in Social Work Studies, University of Sheffield.
