The 2011 RCGP Annual Primary Care Conference –
Diversity in Practice – held at the ACC Liverpool from 20 to 22
October is now less than two weeks away. The Conference will
bring together key figures from across the health and social care
sectors at a critical time for primary care and the health service
in general.
In her keynote speech on Thursday 20 October, RCGP Chair Dr
Clare Gerada will focus on the changing face of general practice,
and healthcare in diverse communities.
Dr Gerada said: “GPs are being pulled in all directions, but we
must never lose sight of the reason we came into the profession –
caring for our patients.”
Returning for a second year, Secretary of State for
Health Andrew Lansley will address the Conference at
11.30am on Saturday 22 October.
Keynote speakers include:
- Lord Victor Adebowale, Chief Executive of the Turning Point
charity
- Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder and director of Kids
Company
- John Carnochan, Detective Chief Superintendent of the Violence
Reduction Unit, Scotland
On Friday 21 October, the moral and ethical implications
inherent in the issue of the affordability of future healthcare
will be debated by a panel Chaired by the Lancet Editor Dr Richard
Horton. The panel comprises Ipsos MORI Chief Executive Ben Page,
NICE Chairman Sir Michael Rawlins, BMA Chair Dr Hamish Meldrum,
Baroness Julia Cumberlege, and RCGP Chair Dr Clare Gerada.
The Conference will also feature clinical updates and offer
sessions on patient issues, practice developments, education,
innovation, research and quality.
Additional clinical highlights include:
- Chronic pain and nutrition for health – led by Dr Imran Rafi,
Medical Director, RCGP CIRC
- Domestic violence and social inclusion – led by Professor Helen
Lester, Chair of RCGP CIRC and Dr Ben Riley, RCGP Medical Director
for e-Learning
- Doctors, vulnerable adults and emergency situations, led by Dr
Matthew Hoghton, RCGP Clinical Champion for Learning
Disability
- Respiratory update – featuring Dr Kevid Gruffydd-Jones, RCGP
Clinical Champion for Respiratory Disease
