RCGP responds to latest report from the NHS Future Forum
10/1/12
RCGP today issued a response to the latest
report from the NHS Future Forum.
RCGP Chair Dr Clare Gerada said:
"Today's report from the Future Forum contains some excellent
recommendations for strengthening the role of the GP within the
NHS, both today and in the future. It is heartening to see a GP and
former Chair of the RCGP leading the Forum and we would like to
acknowledge the efforts of Professor Steve Field in ensuring that
the GP voice was represented in drawing up these proposals.
"We are particularly pleased to see the emphasis on extended
training for GPs. More GPs, who are trained for longer, spending
more time with their patients through longer consultations, are
RCGP priorities and it is reassuring to see these gaining wider
support.
"The report also acknowledges the crucial role of GPs in the
planning and delivery of joined-up services for patients. GPs are
the key to delivering integrated services - locally led and built
around the patient - in the community and in the traditional
hospital setting. Good communication between GP and hospital
consultants is vital, especially when patients are being referred
and discharged, so we welcome the Forum's recommendations for
improving this process and making it more consistent. We also look
forward to working with the BMA on access to patient records and
ensuring that patients have a comprehensive knowledge and
understanding of how to use the information.
"However, we do have concerns about raising 'lifestyle' issues
with all patients at every consultation. GPs have always used
opportunities to promote good health - but we must remember that
the patient comes to us with their agenda - and it is important we
do not take over. Every contact should count, in that when the
patient leaves the consulting room they must feel that the doctor
has listened to them, addressed their needs and was kind. This is
the best way to ensure that the next time they visit their GP they
can trust them enough to talk about their drinking, or their
husband's gambling or any other personal concerns and fears."
