Have your say on the role of the GP in the future

20 October 2011

The role of the GP and general medicine in the NHS, today and in the future, will be up for discussion at the RCGP Annual Primary Care Conference – Diversity in Practice – held at the ACC Liverpool from 20 to 22 October.

On Friday 21 October at 5.50 pm, RCGP Honorary Secretary Professor Amanda Howe will be talking through the findings of the Commission on Generalism report, published earlier this month by an independent panel of experts.

Chaired by Baroness Ilora Finlay, the Commission was initiated by the RCGP and leading think tank the Health Foundation to explore the concept of generalism in today's NHS and make recommendations to help develop, strengthen and promote medical generalism in the future.

The RCGP is now consulting College members on the recommendations in the report before publishing its formal response in 2012.

The consultation includes a series of "listening events" at venues around the UK. Some places are still available; please contact paul.deponte@rcgp.org.uk for further details.

The listening events are:

  • 24 October, London
  • 27 October, Cardiff
  • 3 November, Manchester
  • 9 November, Glasgow
  • 14 November, Portsmouth
  • 16 November, Belfast

The College will also be holding a wider formal written consultation later in the year.

RCGP Chair Dr Clare Gerada said: “As a profession we have unique skills in our ability to provide continuity of care to patients, manage patients across their physical, psychological and social needs and to act as navigators of care. However, the world in which we operate is becoming increasingly complicated and complex and we must make sure that other health professionals are able to support us in this work.

"The Commission's report - and our response to it - has the potential to influence College policy for years to come and It is really important that as many of our Members and Fellows as possible get involved and give us their views."
