Flexible working enables more GPs to provide safe patient care, says RCGP

Publication date: 16 June 2017

Responding to this morning's reporting of comments made at the NHS Confederation conference yesterday, Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Royal College of GPs, said:

“GPs and our teams across the country are facing intense resource and workforce pressures. Our workload has risen by 16% over the last seven years, yet investment in our service has decreased, and the number of GPs has not risen in step with escalating patient demand.

“Far from contributing to our lack of GPs, flexible working actually enables highly trained family doctors to remain in the workforce, delivering the care that our patients need and deserve.

“Four days in general practice involves working far more hours than the average full time job. Our research has shown that 11-hour days in surgery are not uncommon, and that’s before the urgent administrative tasks that need completing on a daily basis. This is not safe for GPs, our staff or our patients.

“We mustn’t get distracted from the bigger picture and what our profession really needs – more investment and thousands more GPs. We are calling on the Government to deliver NHS England’s GP Forward View, including £2.4bn extra a year for general practice, and 5,000 more full-time equivalent GPs, as a matter of urgency, so that we can continue to deliver safe and quality care to our patients.”
