Vacancy for RCGP Honorary Secretary of Council

Publication date: 09 August 2013

RCGP are recruiting for a new Honorary Secretary of Council.

The College’s current Honorary Secretary, Prof. Amanda Howe, is to stand down from the post of Honorary Secretary in November 2013.

We now need to appoint a new Honorary Secretary to succeed Prof. Howe from November 2013 to November 2017. The term of office of the post is 4 years.

The vacancy is open to any member of the College in good standing, providing they meet the eligibility criteria.  Applicants for the post must be proposed and seconded by two members of College also in good standing.

The post-holder will be expected to work up to 2 whole days (4 sessions) on College business – core executive meetings are held Thursday mornings from 8.a.m., so working days are usually Wednesdays/Thursdays, unless it is a Council week or other commitments pertain.

The role has a significant challenge. In order to achieve its ambitious programme, the College requires a clear and robust system of governance. The newly established Board of Trustees intends to create a Planning and Resources Committee, chaired by the Hon. Treasurer, to support more streamlined planning and resource allocation. At the same time the College wishes to enhance systems for consulting with members and ensuring devolved councils and faculties have the greatest opportunity to shape policy and priorities. A strengthened leadership team will provide a valuable interface between these bodies and the College’s executive directors. Trustees also wish to refine college processes for elections and implement the lessons learned from recent reviews, and have agreed to establish a new Governance & Nominations Committee, to be chaired by the Hon. Secretary.

The Hon Sec, supported by a new Company Secretary, will be charged with ensuring these arrangements work together, and that College governance is clear, appropriate and effective.

If you would like an informal discussion about the role, please contact the current Hon. Secretary direct on
