The RCGP welcomes the announcement today by the Secretary of State for Health on the start of Revalidation as good news for patients and for GPs.

Our College has been working closely with GPs, patients, the GMC, BMA, and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges over several years, to ensure that revalidation is a positive process of learning and reflection for GPs, with two main aims: to help GPs ensure they are practising professionally and safely and to reassure patients that they are getting the care they need.

The RCGP is committed to ensuring that it supports its members to make appraisal and revalidation as smooth and positive a process as possible. It has produced a number of resources, specific revalidation guidance, and support for continuing professional development (CPD).

Professor Mike Pringle who has been leading the RCGP’s work on Revalidation over several years, said: “We have worked hard to ensure that revalidation will be as effective for GPs and patients as possible. We have listened to the ideas and concerns of patients, GPs and colleagues and are confident that revalidation will not be an onerous task for GPs: it will help them in many ways to ensure they provide good care for patients and get the most out of their own careers.”

Professor Nigel Sparrow, Medical Director for Revalidation, said: "We will continue to provide leadership and practical support throughout the introduction of revalidation and beyond. It is vital that we get this right for patients and for doctors. We want to make sure sure that revalidation is fair for all doctors, regardless of their working circumstances."
