RCGP media reponse to CMO annual report

Publication date: 21 November 2012

Commenting on the CMO's Annual Report released today (21/11/12) Dr Clare Gerada, Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said:

“This important report from Professor Sally Davies highlights the risk factors which all of us understand, but which a sizable number find difficult to face up to: heavy drinking, smoking, little or no exercise, and not eating a healthy balanced diet are not good for your health.

"The RCGP agrees that action is needed to combat the reasons for preventable early deaths and disability from conditions such as liver disease and diabetes.

"For several years, in an attempt to stem the rising numbers of people dying from alcohol-related liver disease, the RCGP has been calling for a minimum price per unit of alcohol. GPs across the UK also continue to encourage everyone who consumes alcohol not to binge drink and to understand the recommended daily and weekly limits for men and women.

"For those of us who, for a variety of  reasons including socio-economic, do not or cannot take care of our health and who have not succumbed to one or more of the many diseases or conditions readily available in today's society, it may just be a matter of time."
