RCGP celebrates inspirational general practice

GPs from across the UK have been recognised for their contribution to high quality patient care by the Royal College of General Practitioners.

A selection of awards, fellowships, and medals were presented at the RCGP’s Annual General Meeting College to GPs and other healthcare professionals who have worked towards furthering high quality general practice.

The event also marked the end of Dr Iona Heath’s three-year term as RCGP President, and the succession of Professor Mike Pringle.

Dr Colin Hunter, who stepped down after ten years as RCGP Honorary Treasurer, was presented with the RCGP’s Foundation Council Award for his many achievements, including the acquisition and refurbishment of the College’s new flagship London headquarters at 30 Euston Square.

Eighty six new Fellowships - the highest grade of RCGP membership - were awarded to GPs from across the UK in recognition of their work to improve the care of their patients.

Honorary Fellowships were presented to Sue Roberts, now retired from her role as National Clinical Director for Diabetes, and to Frank Strang, Deputy Director, Primary Care Division of the Scottish Department of Health, for his strong support of several RCGP Scotland initiatives, including the ‘Deep End’ project and recent ‘Developing Leadership’ project.

The President’s Medal was given to Dr John V Howard for his pioneering work over several  years on the development of the College’s International Programme for the assessment and accreditation of doctors.  Since it began in 1998 ‘local’ versions of the MRCGP examination, the MRCGP [INT] have been adopted by six nations. The College welcomed its first international fellows earlier this year.

The overall winners of the GP Enterprise Awards were Thamesmead Medical Associates, Greenwich, London, for their opportunistic health screening programme which has been adopted and rolled out by local commissioners.

The GP Enterprise awards are presented each year in partnership with GP Newspaper, whose readers voted for the winners, and the RCGP is grateful to the Medical Defence Union for sponsoring the awards. The Fraser Rose Medal was presented to Dr Deepak Hora for achieving the highest mark in the MRCGP exam over the past year.

The John Horder Award, presented annually to a member of RCGP staff, went to Dilip Manek, Finance Director at the College.

The event concluded with the James Mackenzie Lecture, presented this year by Professor Helen Lester on achieving better health outcomes for people with serious mental illness.
