Work Placements

Thinking of how to get a work placement or work experience, as a medical student. Here is some useful information.

Work experience/ work placements are increasingly becoming a a useful and invaluable form of experience on the journey to becoming a GP.  These should be arranged on a local level either directly through the practice via the local PCT or via your local deanery.  The deaneries and PCT's will have a list of training pratices in the area. However, we appreciate that it can be difficult to obtain work experience in GP surgeries, you can also look for experience as a volunteer in a hospital or other community establishments.

Apart from just trying to obtain work experience, you can also consider working part time during term-time in health related areas. These can include: Healthcare assistant, Care support worker and Medical Secretary. This will help you obtain some very useful transferable skills. Visit NHS Professionalsexternal link icon
