Entry to GP Training
Find more information about the different
stages and the important dates.

A GP VTS training programme is currently 3 years long, normally
including 18 months in an approved training practical and 18 months
in approved hospital posts. There are presently no definite
plans when this will be increased to 5 years, but some deaneries
offer a few 4 year schemes which provide extra valuable
experience.
The exact hospital posts offered by deaneries in their
programmes will vary but you will be offered a complete programme
that complies with the regulations set by the GMC.
Assessments
Entry into the GP speciality training involves 3 stages of
application:
- On line application. Your application will be long-listed
against the essential eligibility criteria including recent
achievement of foundation competencies.
- Shortlisting using an applied knowledge and situational
judgement test to assess some of the competences required.
This test is delivered by computer at a number of venues across the
UK.
- A selection centre process which involves patient simulation
and written exercises.
All stages require the applicant to meet the person
specification for entry into GP training and the essential
competences outlined on the recruitment website.
Example questions from the shortlisting
test and example exercises from the selection centre are available
on the recruitment website.
