How to become a member of RCGP?
Learn about the requirements for joining,
category criteria and how to apply.
The Royal College of General Practitioners offers various types
of membership. A summary of requirements and criteria for
the individual membership categories is outlined below.
You may wish to use the RCGP membership selection tool to see which
membership is right for you.
Membership
- Available to medical practitioners who have successfully passed
the MRCGP examination or iMAP assessment
- Entitles holder to utilise all RCGP membership
benefits and to apply for Fellowship after 5 years of
continuous Membership
- Entitles holder to use MRCGP post-nominals while Membership
remains in good standing
- Entitles holder to participate in College ballots

International membership
- Available to family doctors who passed
the MRCGP [Int] in one of the approved
centres

Associateship
- Available to all GMC fully registered medical practitioners who
have completed vocational training for General Practice.
- Associate members are entitled to all membership benefits. However, they cannot use
the post-nominals MRCGP and some restrictions apply to college
ballots.
- Associateship is awarded at no extra cost to iMAP
(Membership by Assessment) candidates
as a part of
the iMAP2 package
- Existing Associates are welcomed to undertake the iMAP assessment, which is a programme
specifically designed for practising GPs. Successful completion
of the programme leads to full Membership

Fellowship
- Fellowship is an honour, denoting the
esteem in which a Member of
the College is
held by his or her
peers
- Who is eligible: Members with 5 years
continuous membership and full
GMC
registration can apply or
be nominated
for Fellowship
- How: With the support of a nominator and two seconders,
you can be nominated or self-apply for
Fellowship.
