Membership fees

RCGP members pay annual subscription fees based on a number of criteria including your country of residence, gross income, individual circumstances and tax situation. Members who are UK tax payers can claim up to 40 per cent on their RCGP subscription.

Your membership renewal is due on 1 April each year. New joiners pay their first year’s fees pro-rata, based on the date of joining the College.

How to pay my membership

1. Payment by Direct Debit

For members based in the UK, Direct Debit is the easiest and most cost-effective way to pay.

You’ll receive a minimum of two weeks' written notice prior to the first collection in any subscription year.

We offer two options for a payment by Direct Debit:

  • Annual Direct Debit: One lump sum payment due on or immediately after 1 April each year. If you’re setting up a Direct Debit arrangement after 1 April, you’ll be notified of the nearest collection date.
  • Direct Debit by quarterly instalments: This allows you to spread the cost of your subscription fee over the year. The four instalments are collected on or immediately after the first working day of April, July, October and January. If you’re setting up the Direct Debit arrangement after 1 April, you’ll be notified of the collection dates if they’re not in line with the standard schedule.

In case of hardship, you can contact us to set up Direct Debit payments in more frequent instalments. Please note that this is a discretionary service. Kindly contact the Member Services Team on 020 3188 7766 / membership@rcgp.org.uk for further details.

There are two ways you can set up a Direct Debit:

  • By telephone: If you’re a UK account holder, you may be able to set up your Direct Debit over the phone, provided you are the authorised sole signatory on the account or a joint account holder with sole signatory status for example cheque sign off. Please contact the Member Services team who will be able to assist you.
  • Sending a form by post: Alternatively, you can download and complete the Direct Debit mandate forms, quoting your membership number in the reference field. If you do not know your membership number, please write your GMC number in the section provided on the form.

An original signature is required, hence, you need to return the original and signed forms by post. Please note that we cannot accept photocopied, faxed or emailed Direct Debit forms.

Direct Debit payments cannot be processed for first subscription payments between January and March (the last quarter of the membership year). If you are joining during this period, your initial payment must be made either by cheque or credit or debit card only. Your completed Direct Debit mandate will be used for subscription payments from 1 April.

Forms for UK account holders

2. Payment by card

We accept payments by MasterCard, Visa, Visa Debit and Maestro accounts. Please note that we do not accept American Express and cannot accept card payments from debit cards held outside the UK, due to processing requirements.

There are three ways you can pay by card:

  • By telephone: Please call your Member Services Team on 020 3188 7766 with your card payment details.
  • By post: Please complete the credit or debit card payment form and return it to the Member Services Department by post or direct line fax number 020 7581 3648.
  • Existing members: without a Direct Debit instruction in place can renew their membership online.

You will be reminded of your annual package fee due on 1 April every year via a renewal invitation. If you have any questions about your AiT package fees, please do not hesitate to contact the Member Services Team on 020 3188 7766.

Subscription fee discounts

Subscription Fee Discounts

There are a number of discounts available. Please check before selecting your rate. If you are a Direct Debit payer, please notify us of your reduced rate as soon as possible, prior to the payment collection date. Please note that your annual RCGP fee is tax deductible - you can claim back up to 40% tax from HMRC if you reside in the United Kingdom.

£100 discount from full rate for first 2 years of full Membership (MRCGP)

The College recognises the hardship and financial pressures newly qualified GP's face. For this reason, a £100 discount from the full rate (only) is automatically applied to subscription fees of full Members who have passed MRCGP within 2 years of the subscription year start (on 1 April) and who have been full Members for (or) less than 2 subscription years. Members are welcome and advised to claim discounts on any other grounds if the rate is more favourable.

Hardship

We may offer discounts in cases of hardship. Cases of hardship are considered on an individual basis. Please contact your Member Services Team for details.

Membership of another Royal Medical College

If you’re not working as a GP and are a member of another UK Royal Medical College or Faculty, you can join the RCGP with a ‘secondary affiliation’ status. In this case, you could qualify for a discount of up to 50% on the full RCGP membership fee.

Maternity, Paternity and Adoption leave

The RCGP understands the financial pressures that can arise from taking maternity, paternity or adoption leave. Therefore, if you are a UK resident* and were on Maternity, Paternity or Adoption leave between 2 April 2016 and 1 April 2017, you can claim a 75 percent discount against the RCGP full membership fee (please note that Associates in Training receive a dedicated AiT package). If your leave starts on or after 2 April 2017, you will be able to claim this rate in the 2018-2019 subscription year commencing on 1 April 2018.

This reduction is available for one subscription year per child; however, you may be able to claim other reduced rates subsequently (e.g. based on income or continued career break). If your leave falls across two subscription years, the discount will be applied for the year in which the major part of your leave falls - please get in touch with the Member Services Team who will be happy to help. Don't forget to claim your tax back to reduce your fees even further!

The discount can be claimed in respect of Additional Paternity leave and not the ordinary 1-2 week paternity leave. This ensures that you receive the minimum rate if you are taking time out to look after your child while your spouse/partner returns to work (i.e. paternity leave based on 'unused' maternity leave or adoption leave).

*England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland

Moving overseas

If you live overseas on 1 April of any subscription year, we’ll automatically apply a discount to your membership fee in line with our standard charge for your country of residence, provided we have your main overseas residence address on file.

If you have recently moved overseas, please contact your Member Services Team with your new address. Your overseas rate will be applied on the following 1 April.

Voluntary work

You may qualify for a discount if you’re working for a voluntary organisation. Please contact your Member Services Team for details.

Reduced income

All UK members are entitled to reduced rates based on income. Please refer to the above fee tables for income categories.

Retirement & Life membership

Members who on 1 April in any subscription year have fully, permanently retired from medical practice (i.e. having relinquished their licence to practice and no longer participate in the annual appraisal cycle) can claim a 75 percent discount on the RCGP full membership fee.

Alternatively, fully retired members can apply for Life membership upon payment of a lump sum equal to three times the full annual subscription fee, applicable for the current subscription year under Bye-Law 3. Life membership payments are tax deductible, provided payment is made during the retirement year while still in employment. No further fees will be payable thereafter. If you wish to take up Life membership, please contact the Member Services Team on  020 3188 7766 or be email: membership@rcgp.org.uk .

Members who have either reached 40 years continuous membership or have reached age 70 also receive Life Membership. No further membership fees would be due from the following 1 April renewal.

Not in active employment

If you are a UK resident and not in employment on 1 April of any subscription year (e.g. due to career break or ill health), you can claim a 75 per cent discount on our full membership fee.

Claiming tax relief

Claiming tax relief

If you are a UK taxpayer you can reduce the cost of your subscription fee through tax relief. In addition, you may also be able to backdate your claim for previous years. You can use your subscription receipt that is automatically emailed to you each year following fee payment for this purpose. Please contact your tax advisor or the HM Revenue and Customs for advice concerning your individual claim and circumstances.

How do I claim tax relief?

Information on making a claim is available from HM Revenue and Customs on 0845 300 0627 or online on the HMRC website.

How much will I get back?

This will depend on a number of factors including your subscription fee level and your tax situation. As a guide, members who are UK tax payers can claim up to 40 per cent on their RCGP subscription.
