First5
First5 is a new initiative which will
support new GPs from completion of training to the first point of
revalidation at five years. Initiated by the AiT Committee (08/09)
Council approved the concept for delivery over the next 2-3
years.
Why is there a need?
The first years after training can be a difficult time for new
GPs who find themselves in the ever-changing landscape of modern
general practice. In the final year of training, Associates in
Training (AiTs) are well supported by the RCGP and local deaneries.
They have regular contact with their trainer, peer support at
vocational training schemes (VTS) and a job that has often been
guaranteed for the three years running up to obtaining a
Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent. The day
after finishing the VTS, however, the newly qualified GP has a very
different world to face. The trainer is no longer present in the
next room as a source of advice and guidance and there is no
regular allocated time to meet up with colleagues so the peer
support enjoyed at VTS may be lost. The employment landscape is
uncertain and newly qualified GPs often find themselves working in
unfamiliar practices.
A Phased Approach
Work is being done in five areas:
· Connecting with
College - promoting a sense of belonging and appropriate
representation within the College
· Facilitating
networks – peer support and mentoring
· Supporting
revalidation
· Career mentorship
– making the most of a career in general practice
· Continuous
professional development (CPD) and new skills
