FAQs - cancelling RCGP membership

Here are some questions that your fellow doctors had about cancelling RCGP membership.

Can I use my MRCGP or FRCGP post-nominals after I cancel my membership?

No, the post-nominals stand for Member of RCGP or Fellow of RCGP and can only be used by members in good standing (i.e. active, paid-up members).

How will cancelling my membership affect eligibility for Life Membership?

Automatic free Life Membership is awarded to those doctors who have been members for 40 continuous years; without a break in membership. If you resign and subsequently reinstate your membership (unless within the same membership year), you will lose the continuity of membership.

Can I suspend my membership (e.g. I am not working)?

No, there is no option to suspend one's membership. However, if you are not working or on low income, there is a number of reduced rates available to keep your membership. Please see our subscription discounts section. In addition, we will be able to provide a letter of good standing/recommendation to your potential employer, should this be required.

I am moving abroad, can I remain a member?

Yes, we have overseas rates available, discounted by 50% and 75%. Also, you may require a letter of membership confirmation/good standing from the College, in order to practice abroad (especially for Australia and USA).

Will cancelling my membership have impact on revalidation?

You will be able to purchase the revalidation e-Portfolio as a non-member. However, RCGP members will get access to the revalidation e-Portfolio and support with revalidation as part of membership benefits. More detailed information will be available in 2011.

What do I do if I decide to resign?

You will need to inform the membership services team in writing at membership@rcgp.org.uk  Please provide us with your membership number (or GMC number) and brief reason for resignation. Upon receipt we will remove your bank details from our files (if you are a Direct Debit payer), however, you will need to cancel the Direct Debit instruction directly with your bank. Your record will be closed and you will receive a written confirmation.

Can I cancel membership over the phone?

No, you can only cancel membership in writing in order to avoid any confusion.

Can my Practice, spouse, or other person cancel membership on my behalf?

No, for your own protection only you can cancel RCGP membership. Should you have difficulty writing your letter of resignation, someone can, of course do it on your behalf, as long as the letter has your signature or email arrives from your email account.

If I resign, do I get a refund?

This will depend on the time of resignation, payment and other factors. Please contact membership services team for assistance.
