Join RCGP: Trainee GPs (AiTs)

As a trainee GP we're here to support you as you start your journey into general practice. We run the MRCGP, which is the assessment required to become a GP in the UK. We've got a tailored membership offering for trainee GPs - Associates in Training (AiTs).

There are two options for trainee GPs who want to sit the MRCGP; RCGP membership or the Trainee non-member package. Both options include RCGP certification and access to the trainee ePortfolio, however only joining as a member gives you the additional benefits outlined below.

We're here to support your learning as you start your career in general practice. As a member we'll supply you with free publications, courses and events, an extensive medical library as well as a variety of online learning modules.

Our Clinical Innovation and Research Centre constantly seek to develop innovative ways to improve patient care. As a member you can benefit from and shape the focus of this work. You'll also be given opportunities to influence the GPs of tomorrow by meeting and mentoring medical students and foundation doctors with an interest in general practice.

Registration fees

Registration fees for RCGP membership (Associate in Training)

Annual membership currently runs from 1 April each year, so when you sign up for membership part way through the year you’ll need to pay a proportional fee to take you up to 31 March. After that there will be an annual membership fee.

 Initial pro rata membership fee: £273.40

Annual membership subscription

  • Full time or over 76%: £399.00*
  • Trainees who are less than full-time (under 76%) - £199.50*
  • Trainees on maternity leave - £199.50*

*Prices are subject to change with inflation

Your annual subscription will be taken by direct debit on 1 April every year until you complete your training. If you are joining GP training after January 2018, please call membership on 020 3188 7766 for information on amended fees.

Discounts available for Associate in Training members

  • Claim back your membership subscription 

As a member, you can claim back up to 40% in tax on your initial registration fee and annual AiT membership subscription fees. Simply use the tax receipt you will receive by email after each payment. Unfortunately, we are unable to give specific tax advice, if you would like more information on this, please consult with your tax advisor or accountant and/or HMRC

  • Out of Program and maternity relief 

You have the option of suspending your AiT membership subscription during maternity leave and Out of Program Experience. Please note, this also results in suspension of access to the Trainee ePortfolio, online exam booking systems and all other member benefits. Upon returning to training, AiTs should notify Member Services at, or call 020 3188 7766 to have their membership reinstated.

Registration fees for trainee non-members

You don’t have to become an AiT member of the RCGP, but you still need to gain access to the Trainee ePortolio and obtain certification to the GMC.

  • Non-member one off fee: £925

This is payable by credit/debit card only and is paid in one lump sum at the beginning of training. This fee is based on training of up to 4 years. For extended training beyond 3 years, an extension of training non-member fee* will be payable annually. Please note that the non-membership fee is not tax deductible via HMRC.
