RCGP Certificate in the Management of Alcohol Problems in Primary Care

Improve your understanding of alcohol related problems and equip yourself with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage them.

This course consists of a compulsory elearning module followed by a training day. Participants are awarded with a certificate upon successful completion of both the elearning and training.

The course can be linked to CPD hours for appraisal and revalidation.

This evidence based course:

  • equips doctors with knowledge and skills to match the competency framework in Delivering Quality Care for Drug and Alcohol Users: the Roles and Competencies of Doctors
  • follows the public health outcomes framework and public health improvement agenda
  • supports one of the five priority areas for the Health Improvement Directorate of Public Health England (alcohol)
  • encourages quality clinical leadership
  • provides practitioners with transferable skills in motivational interviewing, health behaviour change, managing conflict in consultations and patient safety, including medicines management
  • ultimately encourages patients to keep themselves well, saving vital funds within health budgets.

GPs and other healthcare professionals working in primary care.

eLearning module

The elearning module covers:

  • introduction and evidence based lesson
  • identification and brief advice
  • medical aspects: physical health
  • medical aspects: mental health
  • dependency and medically assisted withdrawal
  • alcohol and the family
  • aftercare, recovery and relapse prevention.

Training days

It is advisable to complete the elearning module before the training day, because it includes pre course learning which will ensure you get the most out of group discussions on the day.

The training day covers:

  • alcohol as a drug
  • alcohol related harm
  • calculating consumption
  • screening tools
  • dependency and the diagnosis of alcohol misuse
  • physical and mental health
  • care planning
  • treatment of alcohol misuse
  • service design and local provision
  • medical assisted withdrawal and controlled reduction
  • relapse prevention
  • safeguarding, driving and vulnerable people.
