Whilst we endeavour to provide a 'gold standard' service to all course participants, if you are registering less than 72 hours before the start of the event, you should be aware that some materials may not be readily available on the day and we may contact you with regards to catering arrangements.

The session examines the role of the chaperone, what to do during an exam, how to communicate with patients who are being examined and includes issues of confidentiality and dignity. We will also look at the dignity and respect of patients especially those who are vulnerable. The session covers all the recommendations from GMC and RCN.

Course programme

What is chaperoning? : Examination of the drivers for non-clinical chaperoning in the practice. Why is it required and what is meant by the term chaperone? Why use non-clinical chaperones?

Chaperoning details: Explore the role of non-clinical chaperone. What type of examinations and situations require a chaperone and what is an 'intimate' examination? Interpersonal skills whilst chaperoning, issues of confidentiality and consent. Chaperone's checklist.

Patient involvement: Uncover the rights of the patient in regards to chaperoning. Learning disabilities and mental health considerations. How can we promote the chaperoning service to patients?

Case studies: What would you do in these situations as a chaperone?

Reflected learning and end assessment: Group assessment - What have you learned today?
