Updates in Palliative Medicine

This talk will provide an update on what’s new in Palliative Medicine including Naloxegol, Granisetron patches as well as policy updates. It will include a refresher on the use of transdermal patches, switching opioids and the management of agitation at the end of life. The talk will be based on Community Case Studies.

Dr Katharine Thompson 

Consultant in Palliative Medicine

Katharine graduated from the University of Edinburgh and then completed her Postgraduate training in Edinburgh where she became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians. Katharine completed her MD in Palliative Medicine in 2008 and has presented this research both nationally and internationally. Katharine took up a substantive Consultant post in NHS Tayside in 2013 having completed Specialty training in the South East Scotland programme.


Katharine is based at Roxburghe House Specialist Palliative Care Unit in Dundee and is Clinical Lead for the Angus Palliative Care Service. She is Co-Director of the Master in Public Health (Palliative Medicine Research), University of Dundee; member of Faculties for the FDA Supporting Trainees with Difficulties and Leadership and Management Programmes and Training Lead for ST Palliative Medicine in Tayside. Katharine is also involved in the development of Undergraduate Palliative Medicine Training and is an OSCE examiner for the University of Dundee.
