It is estimated that almost a fifth of parents of young children in Britain are concerned about their child’s speech and language development, with general practitioners often the first professionals to be approached. This gives primary care a crucial role in early detection of speech and language difficulties, especially around the issues of watchful waiting versus early referral to speech and language therapy. This course will introduce current knowledge on language and speech impairments to enable primary care practitioners to identify the most common problems and presentations and decide on appropriate shared management with parents.
