Whilst we endeavour to provide a 'gold standard' service to all course participants, if you are registering less than 72 hours before the start of the event, you should be aware that some materials may not be readily available on the day and we may contact you with regards to catering arrangements.

This one-day Minor Surgery course is designed as an update and refresher course for GPs who are already practising minor surgery on a regular basis. Topics include: basic surgical technique, suturing techniques, removal of cysts and lipomas, dermatological surgery, cryosurgery, medico-legal, infection control & administration. The programme consists of a series of incisive lectures and interactive small group work using the latest advances in the technology of simulated tissue. There will be a full range of equipment available to provide the widest possible practical experience. The learning atmosphere is informal and participants will have ample opportunity to discuss points of particular interest

The course covers:

1. Medico-legal, infection control, administration using case studies and group work

2. Basic surgical technique (theory and practical):

  • Safe use of equipment (using minor surgery instruments);
  • Planning incisions and suturing (using latex skin pads);
  • Common pitfalls and how to deal with them
  • Cysts (using latex cyst pads);
  • Lipomas, abscesses & in-growing toenails (theory);
  • Use of punch biopsy, curettage, snips & shaves (using latex skin pads);
  • Cautery (demonstration of cautery equipment);
  • BCC Update (theory);

3. The pigmented lesion (theory)

4. Cryosurgery (demonstration of cryo equipment);

5. Problem sharing / solving forum and Hot Topics

Dr Kishor Vithlani FRCS, DRCOG, FRCGP, MRCGP Examiner

Kishor is Educational advisor for Mersey Faculty, Clinical Governance Lead for the Liverpool PCT and a trainer for GP registrars. He is also involved with undergraduate teaching at Liverpool University.  He is a GPwSI in skin surgery and doing one session a week for Liverpool & Broadgreen NHS Trust.


Tahir is a GP Trainer, Primary Care Medical Educator and Appraiser.  He has an interest in GP education and Minor surgery and works as an Assistant in Plastic Surgery Dept – Countess of Chester Hospital as well as being a Provider of Minor Surgery Services for Neston and Willaston Locality.
