25% of the primary care workload involves dermatology and many common skin conditions are managed entirely within the Practice. This workload continues to increase as on-going changes in funding and the NHS structure move more patient care into the community. Thus, in collaboration with the Consultant Dermatologist, GPs will be increasingly involved in the disease management of chronic skin conditions.

Dermatology is an area of medicine that is facing major changes from secondary to primary care. The majority of GPs have little or no training in dermatology. Hospital referral rates for dermatology are consistently high.
