The pathway to MRCGP[INT] for Host Examining Bodies

Download a Pathway Flowchart.

STAGE A
Host Examining Body (HEB) expresses interest to the College’s International Committee

STAGE B
The College International Committee replies to HEB with an MRCGP[INT] information pack

STAGE B1
HEB decides not to pursue interest at present

STAGE B2
Negotiation ends until further expression of interest from HEB

STAGE C
HEB confirms a serious interest

STAGE C1
Application not accepted by the College, setting out the reasons

STAGE C2
HEB is interested but indicates need for more information or assistance before proceeding more formally. The College offers support subject to HEB meeting the costs

STAGE D
The College International Committee confirms acceptance of the application from the HEB: Formal negotiations proceed with a contract including probable appointment of International Development Advisor (IDA)

STAGE E
The IDA advises and assists in preparing a Submission Pack [including assessment methods, sample papers, marking schedules, instructions to candidates and training of examiners and plans for revalidation, which includes continuing professional development and quality assurance] which is academically sound and addresses MRCGP[INT] criteria. This is sent to the MRCGP[INT] Board

STAGE F
MRCGP[INT] Board formally considers Submission Pack including clarification questioning. If satisfactory, proceeds with appointment of two assessors: Examination Development Advisers (EDA – see below for roles and responsibilities) who are independent of the IDA

STAGE F1
If Submission Pack deemed to require further developmental work, this is undertaken and Submission Pack resubmitted

STAGE F2
If HEB disagrees with MRCGP[INT] Board decision, one further review of Submission Pack against criteria is undertaken. See ‘Appeals and complaints’

STAGE G
MRCGP[INT] Board visit by team of 2 Examination Development Assessors (EDAs) to HEB, to consider all aspects of the proposal. The IDA (if appropriate) would normally accompany Assessment team to support the HEB but would not contribute to the resulting Recommendation Report to the MRCGP[INT] Board

STAGE H
MRCGP[INT] Board considers EDA Recommendation Report. Approval of a positive recommendation is given to MRCGP[INT] for initial two years to the HEB

STAGE H1
If  a negative recommendation is made,  the explanation and the necessary  developmental conditions are given. The MRCGP[INT] Board will reconsider the decision when conditions have been fulfilled. See Complaints’
