Royal College of General Practitioners and Apollo
The Royal College of General
Practitioners (RCGP) accredits a one-year course in Emergency
Medicine, being delivered by the Apollo Hospitals Group of India at
sites in Hyderabad, Delhi and Chennai. We have been working with
Apollo since 2000, collaborating on courses not just in Emergency
Medicine. We also accredit the four month diploma and one year
fellowship in Family Medicine.
The curriculum for all courses
was jointly developed by Apollo and RCGP and is delivered by
Apollo. RCGP quality assures the programmes through regular
six-monthly visits, as Apollo has very clearly demonstrated its
commitment to the delivery of quality programmes. One of our
International Development Advisers carries out a mid-course
assessment and then returns at the end of the course to act as
External Examiner and RCGP Accreditor.
Course objectives and content include:
- To possess the knowledge and skills to provide emergency care
for patients in all age groups;
- To consider the psychological and social aspects of illness and
not just physical aspects;
- To acknowledge clinical uncertainty and to ensure safe and
effective management decisions for patients;
- To understand the principles of the golden hour and the need
for appropriate care during this period;
- To develop the skills of self-directed lifelong learning and to
make full use of information sources;
- To know the clinical and therapeutic aspects of the most common
emergencies;
- To be skilled in simple techniques to be employed in emergency
situations;
- To be familiar with the equipment and drugs used in
emergencies.
The courses are designed to aid
Indian doctors in their development, and are specifically aimed at
those working within their local communities.
